I'm Gonna Say It…

Social Media is stupid. Gasp! Deep intake of breath. Quick! Close your browser and pretend you never read this.

Every big Executive who knows an ounce about the internet thinks social media is going to solve the world’s problems. Okay, maybe not the world’s problems, but certainly theirs. How many emails have you received saying, “Have we posted the event on MySpace?” Are you kidding? How about, “Have we posted the event on our website?” You know, that site that gets more than a few MILLION unique visitors a month. But, forget that old thing. MySpace with all of your 10,000 “friends” (half of which are SPAM) is a much stronger marketing channel.

Oh and by the way, that email that was sent out? You know the one that generated several hundreds of thousands of dollars in immediate revenue? Yeah, that’s a worthless channel too. MySpace is so much better.

Yes, social media is cool and fun. Hell, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m 100% in love with Facebook. But, it’s not the end all, be all answer, especially for corporations. There are other new interactive channels and strategies that will help you achieve your goals a lot faster and are a shitload more profitable. However, I guarantee they won’t be as fun as this YouTube video.
