5 Ways to Blow

Today’s iMedia article, How Agencies Blew the Pitch, is great. I wish I could have contributed, but since we have a strict no comment policy, I couldn’t add my horror stories. And boy, do I have a lot :)

Just a few things I love about the article and totally agree with:

1. The little things matter! Spelling a company’s name right and pronouncing it correctly are key. And apparently, I’m not the only one who thinks so. If you can’t do that for the presentation, what happens after you have my money? If you can’t get it right when you’re “hungry”, why should I expect you to get it right when you’re “full”?

2. It’s great to be confident, but cocky and arrogant just isn’t cool. I’ve sat through my share of these types of presentations and guess what… they didn’t get the job for the sole reason that they were too arrogant.

3. If I take x amount of time out of my day to explain our business model, tell you exactly how to pitch me and exactly what types of questions/concerns will be asked, you better know the answers. Don’t waste my time with your generic pitch.

4. Relationships matter. Whether you want to admit it or not, “the relationship is the glue that keeps partners together beyond the numbers.” The relationship you have with your business partners is one of the main reasons (a) you were chosen and (b) you’re still around.

5. A final piece of advice: Talk about ME and the benefits to ME. This has to be the oldest rule in the book, but no one seems to ever grasp the concept. I don’t care about you and I don’t want to hear about you. I want to hear what you are going to do for me, me, me.
